Before Vergil could reach Mundus, his charge was interrupted by the opening of a portal. Exhausted from the series of battles he'd endured beforehand, he found himself unable to dodge the obstacle, and was forced to pass through. Furious to have not only been denied his chance at glory, but to have been emptied out in the Human World of all places, he searched for the portal's source.
What he found was a nameless demon, who had taken notice of the fact that Vergil was in no condition to face a battle so important. Because the demon believed Vergil to be the one person aside from Sparda that could have defeated Mundus, he halted the battle before Vergil could fall due to his own carelessness. Though his body was strong, his mind had been weakened by the impulsive desire to obtain more power.
As a result, the demon that had transported him from Hell had agreed to take him back, but only on one condition -- that he spend as much time in the Human World as it would take to sharpen not only his physical abilities, but his impulses and sense of clarity as well.
Realizing this to be his only option if he wanted to fight Mundus, Vergil begrudgingly accepted the offer. When you meet him, this is where he is taken from -- frustrated and impatient to get back to where he wants to be, but doing his best to complete the task at hand.
